Located on the Costa de la Luz, Conil de la Frontera has quickly become one of the most visited places in the province of Cadiz. A small fishing village with white houses, narrow streets and friendly locals, just a short distance from miles of golden sandy beaches overlooking the Atlantic Ocean: all the ingredients are there for enjoying a holiday in Andalusia, between relaxation and fun. Conil is less well known and less crowded than the Andalusian Mediterranean coast and perhaps less frequented than the beaches of Cadiz city, but it has managed to remain in some way authentic: you can still feel the atmosphere of a small Andalusian town, despite the many tourists who come to visit this area every year.
Certainly, as in all the localities on the eastern coast, the wind is unpredictable and during some days spent by the sea it can cause a bit of inconvenience, but Conil is not Tarifa and a bit of wind only helps to take the edge off the African heat! The beaches of Conil de la Frontera
Certainly, the sea of Conil de la Frontera is one of the main reasons visitors are drawn here. Wide, sandy beaches stretching for miles alternate with splendid, semi-hidden coves.
Starting from the south and heading north, we find:
Playa de El Palmar
Among the most famous in the area, it is ideal for families thanks to its width and tranquillity. It stretches for 5 miles, with an average width of 50 metres. The sand is fine and golden and the water is crystal clear and shallow. Although it is famous and busy, especially at weekends, in general it is not overly crowded because it is not near large urban centres, but rather to the south of the town. There are restaurants, shops and bars and near the Torre Nueva area, with showers and toilets, but Playa de El Palmar is still considered one of the virgin beaches of the province of Cadiz.
Playa de Castilnovo
Just outside Conil de la Frontera, this beach has remained natural and wild despite being so close to the town. The sand is fine and golden, and the water is clean. When the levante wind blows, it is uncomfortable to sit on the beach sunbathing, but kitesurfing and windsurfing are possible. There are no bars or restaurants nearby, and parking is inconvenient. The best way to get there is on foot from El Palmar. I would not recommend the beach for families with children, especially as part of it is frequented by nudists.
Playa de los Bateles
Situated opposite Conil de la Frontera, this can be considered the town beach and is perfect for those staying in the village. Thanks to its easy access and proximity to the town centre, it is quite popular. It has access walkways, bars and restaurants, a lifeguard service and, in general, is not too windy.
Playa El Chorrillo
Located near the town of Conil de la Frontera, this beach is mainly frequented by young people as access is more difficult than Playa de los Bateles and there are several flights of steps to climb to reach it. Characterised by fine sand interspersed with large rocks, here you will find a bar and a restaurant open in summer, as well as a parasol and sun lounger hire service.
Playa La Fontanilla
One of the most famous and beautiful beaches on the Costa de la Luz is Playa La Fontanilla. Clear, shallow water, few currents, fine golden sand and a wide range of facilities make it ideal for families with young children. Some of the best restaurants in Conil, open almost all year round, are located here. In summer, there are also chiringuitos where you can eat right on the beach. Parking is not far from the beach, and there are public toilets and showers, as well as a security service.
Playa de El Roqueo
Between Playa de la Fontanilla and Playa Fuente del Gallo, this beach is popular with locals and families. The water is shallow and clean, although at high tide the beach becomes much smaller. Surrounded by high rocks, you have to go down to reach it, but it is easy to access and parking is nearby. Rich in fish, in the evening it is easy to find fishermen with their rods at the edge of the beach.
Playa de la Fuente del Gallo
This is the last broad beach at Conil de la Frontera. It lies opposite the town of La Fuente del Gallo and is characterised by beautiful cliffs and an expanse of sand that is ideal for walking both in the morning and in the evening at sunset. The contrast between the red-orange cliff and the blue of the crystal-clear sea and the azure sky makes this beach a delight to the eye. Fishermen are often found here too.
Cala Puntalejo
This is considered the first cove of Conil de la Frontera and the one closest to the town. Situated near Playa de La Fuente, it is reached by walking about 150 metres from the car park. Sheltered from the wind thanks to the cliff, the seabed at low tide has various rocks and is therefore more popular with couples than with families with children.
Cala del Aceite
Near the fishermen’s port of Conil, it is the largest cove in the town. Facing south, it is sheltered when the levante blows. There are not many facilities on the beach, but in summer there is a chiringuito. Cars must be left above the cliff and you go down via some steps.
Calas de Roche or de Poniente
These coves situated between the Conil de la Frontera area and the village of Roche are unique for their beauty. Although they are natural and still fairly wild, they have easy access via steps. The coves are: Cala de El Faro, Cala Tio Juan de Medina, Cala del Pato, Cala del Frailecillo, Cala Aspero and Cala Encendida.
Things to do in Conil de la Frontera
The historic centre of Conil de la Frontera (casco antiguo) has great charm. A dazzling whiteness welcomes the visitor, who should not miss a visit to the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de las Virtudes, the town’s main church, to the Ayuntamiento de Conil with its façade in the typical Andalusian style, the Arco de la Villa or Puerta de Vejer, El Baluarte and Plaza de España with the statue of Jose Saramago.
The original nucleus of the town was the area where Plaza de Santa Catalina, with the Torre de Guzman, the Iglesia de Santa Catalina and the Museo de Raices Conileñas, stands today. In the evening the centre of Conil de la Frontera comes alive and fun is guaranteed in this wonderful setting between land, sea and history: after all, the nightlife in Conil de la Frontera is renowned throughout the province!
