The areas where the nightlife venues in Malaga are concentrated vary and, depending on the kind of night you’re after, it’s advisable to head to different parts of the city. While the historic centre (Plaza de la Merced and Plaza de Uncibay) is frequented mainly by the locals, the university area is populated by young Spaniards and internationals who carefree enjoy the aperitif hour and Malaga’s nocturnal movida; the port area, meanwhile, is more suited to those seeking sophisticated venues. Finally, don’t underestimate the coastal towns outside the city, which during summer evenings offer a wide choice of bars and nightclubs for tourists.

Nightlife in Malaga: pubs, tapas bars and alternative vibes
- If you want to spend a decidedly special evening, Recyclo Bike is the right place. Not far from the centre of Malaga, almost on the banks of the Guadalmedina river (at Plaza Enrique Garcia Herrera 16), this place began as a bike hire and, over time, has added a venue where you can eat simple but high-quality dishes, or have a drink, and it occasionally hosts events.
- Cafe con libros, in Plaza de la Merced 19, is a literary café suitable for spending a quieter evening, having a bite to eat or simply sipping a drink in a young, book-lined setting. This venue retains a typically local atmosphere, with low prices and quality food, and regularly hosts small musical events, readings and exhibitions of various kinds.
- Bambù in Calle Santa Lucía 11, a stone’s throw from Museo Picasso, offers a very youthful, trendy atmosphere, ideal for spending the evening sipping a drink and smoking shisha with the DJ’s music playing in the background.
- To stay in the mood for a relaxed but far-from-ordinary evening, Ocean’s Café & Tapas (in Calle Tomas Echeverria,10) is the right place for “tapear”, but also, and above all, for drinking a good beer (at very reasonable prices) or distinctive cocktails.
- If you are a wine lover and want to spend an evening with a theme, the Antigua Casa de Guardia (Alameda Principal, 18) is a very particular tavern-wine bar that offers a selection of strictly local wines. Besides being a historic venue, whose management has been in the same hands for several generations, this wine bar is the ideal place to fully immerse yourself in the local flavours. Nightclubs and venues with live music
The following are just some of the options for a mad adventure in Malaga by night. The nightlife in this city is really lively, and you’ll be spoilt for choice.
- Alongside the celebrated Sala Gold (Calle Luis de Velázquez 5), the nightclub Andén, in Plaza de Uncibay 8, is probably one of the largest nightclubs in Malaga, with several dance floors and bars, open from Thursday to Saturday until 7 in the morning.
- If you’re the clubbing type, also try the Discoteca Liceo (Calle Beatas 21), a well-known venue with a modern style set in an old two-storey building with four dance floors, where music nights and shows to suit every taste are in full swing.
- Staying in the vicinity of Malaga city centre but changing the style a little, the ZZ Pub (Calle Tejón y Rodríguez6) is noteworthy, an institution when it comes to concerts and music nights. It offers a packed programme of events for live music lovers and is much appreciated by young locals.
- A few kilometres from Malaga, in a place called Benalmádena, you can let loose at Kiu, a very crowded nightclub popular with tourists on summer nights, which is located in the famous Plaza Solymar, also known as “the 24-hour square”.

Bear in mind that if you want to immerse yourself in a “cosmopolitan” atmosphere and surround yourself with young international students the ideal option is to choose venues along the seafront in El Palo and Pedregalejo: the nightlife here is decidedly lively, with many restaurants and tapas bars where you can eat pescado and a wide variety of local dishes; drink prices are fairly low and many nightspots offer free entry.
As mentioned, if you prefer more refined surroundings, it is advisable to head to the port area, where you can choose from numerous bistros and sea-view lounge bars.
